Central School District's Long-Range Performance Goals surrounding third-grade students look at both the current group of third-graders as well as the K-3 cohort of students.

This allows us to keep our fingers on the pulse of our third graders, who are taking the state assessments for the first time, as well as watch the growth of our kinders as they ascend to third grade.

This type of focus helps us to get students the help they need to bridge the gap in skills for reading, language arts, and mathematics as they work through these first years of learning on their K-12 journey. These first years is when students are "learning to read," and begin to "read to learn."

Research shows that students who can't read at grade level by third grade are four times more likely to leave high school without a diploma.

Las metas de rendimiento a largo plazo del Distrito Escolar Central en torno a los estudiantes de tercer grado analizan tanto el grupo actual de estudiantes de tercer grado como el grupo de estudiantes de K-3.

Esto nos permite mantenernos al tanto de nuestros estudiantes de tercer grado, quienes están tomando las evaluaciones estatales por primera vez, así como observar el crecimiento de nuestros niños de kinder  a medida que ascienden al tercer grado.

UNIVERSAL SCREENER VS. STATE TESTS

Both are useful data points.

Central School District staff use the Universal Screener tools to test students three times a year -- fall, winter, and spring -- to determine what help they need to get or stay on track. One major benefit of these assessments is that educators can use the data immediately to help students through interventions.

The state of Oregon uses the Smarter Balanced Assessments each spring to determine how students meet certain standards. The results of this test are not released until the following fall.  Because the results are released after students have moved to the next grade, the data is not as immediately useful. Regardless, it remains an important data point.

Language arts proficiency: Language arts encompasses reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Achievement refers to scores on a test, looking at a student's proficiency at their grade level. Growth shows how much a student is learning in the reading standards. Central School District believes that students must grow in their learning to achieve higher test results.

Emerging bilingual students are learning more than one language. It can take many years to become proficient in a second language.

Central School District's Long-Range Performance Goals surrounding sixth-grade students look at both the current group of sixth graders as well as the 4-6 cohort of students.

This allows us to keep our fingers on the pulse of students as they transition to sixth grade, who are moving to a new school, a new schedule, and all the things that come with moving to a new environment, like those tricky lockers! This also allows us to keep track of our students' growth and achievement as they make the climb from elementary school to middle school.

This type of focus ensures students get the help they need to bridge the gap in skills for reading, language arts, and mathematics as they work through these upper elementary years of learning on their K-12 journey. These pivotal years are when students are continuing to "read to learn," advancing their comprehension, vocabulary development, and critical thinking, while transitioning to young adulthood.
