Homeless Student Assistance (McKinney-Vento)

If you live in any of the following situations, you may qualify for certain rights or protections under the McKinney-Vento Assistance Act.

  • Shelter or transitional housing
  • Motel or hotel
  • Sleeping in a vehicle, tent, RV, public space, campground
  • Accommodations that do not have plumbing, heating or electricity
  • Living with many people
  • Staying with friends or family due to hardship, eviction, foreclosure
  • Migratory students meeting the descriptions above

Eligible students have the right to:

  • Stay in the school that they were attending when they lost housing, or enroll in their neighborhood school
  • Enroll in school immediately, even if they do not have their documentation or immunizations
  • Access the same programs, services and appropriate supports as all students
  • Receive free school meals

Central School District works with students and families to ensure student’s educational needs are met and helps students and families in the following ways:

  • Helps students enroll in school
  • Set up transportation for students to and from school
  • Provide advocacy and outreach services
  • Make referrals to local service providers
  • Coordinate between service providers
  • Help navigate systems
  • Help students with basic needs
  • Refer to other agencies for additional assistance
